A few weeks ago we read that the macaw disappeared from its habitat along with 8 other species due to increasing deforestation and illegal hunting. The news saddened many, mainly because this bird took on an iconic role in the animated film, Rio.

Today, it is reported that the new pigeon is in excellent health, growing its first blue feathers. The “miracle makers” are the members of a recognized association called The Association of Ornithophiles and Allied of Paraguay, who seek to reproduce this species in captivity in order to create a genetic bank to increase its population and, in 10 years, be able to release them in their natural habitat. They’ve turned a sad story to hope, repairing a damage that will take time but will give a second chance to the macaw, a new opportunity that not all extinct species in nature have.
