In Macas, Morona Santiago, the new nature reserve Río Negro-Sopladora y now recognized and incorporated into the National System of Protected Areas of Ecuador on January 23, 2018, is number 55 on the list.
This National Park, located in the eastern part of the province of Azuay and western of the province of Morona Santiago, will be home for the development of research, educational issues, conservation and tourism practice.
Inside the 30,616.28 hectares there is a moorland ecosystem, Andean forests and wetlands where more than 546 species live among plants, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. A part of this extensive area will be conserved as impenetrable and admission will only be allowed for specific research cases for conservation. This whole area is of utmost importance for the water and climate regulation of the region.
