Massacre in the Galapagos

Let’s not let this news be forgotten. On Sunday, August 13, 2017, the National Navy found 300 tonnes of shark fin and young and baby shark fishing inside the Fu Yuan Yu Leng 99, a boat with the Chinese flag captured in the Marine Reserve.

The fishing found in the boat is considered vulnerable fauna, which has led the authorities to conclude that the fishing was done in the protected area. The high amount of hammerhead shark (endangered species) with which the crew was arrested, gave the authorities the basis to apprehend the 20 crew members for the “alleged” crime against the rights of nature. The possible sentence is three years in jail.

Another threat attack against the marine sanctuary is added. Carlos Zumárraga, Chief of Staff of the Naval Operations Command reports that an estimated 100 Chinese vessels (some without flag) have been identified in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Islands performing a “fishing task.” Their presence means an intimidation for the Navy, which does not have the capacity, equipment and men to control a situation of this magnitude.

In addition, fishing in that area means a lower entry of species to the maritime territory of Ecuador. Giorgio de la Torre, director of Hydrography and Nautical Cartography of Inocar ensures that deep-sea fishing without adequate regulation, can mean that the resource does not enter or can be caught within Ecuadorian waters.

Currently, Ecuador has presented a formal protest to China in which they reject the work of fishing for vulnerable species and the presence of the large fleet so close to the EEZ. They also reminded them of the responsibility they have on ships with their country’s flag.

PELAYO SALINAS: FOR THE DEFENSE OF SHARKS

The marine scientist of the Charles Darwin Foundation has taken actions on the matter. His devotion to the protection of the flora and fauna of the sanctuary, especially sharks, has led him to start a crowdfunding campaign in Crowdrise.

On Sunday they wanted to capture a Chinese vessel, but it quickly escaped. Ecuador’s economic crisis affected the budget of the Galapagos National Park and it has not been able to finance better equipment to combat these threats.

To combat the illegal fishing of these animals, the Spaniard Salines asks for $ 200,000 to buy two high-speed boats. As of Friday 18, he had raised $ 11,620 from 92 donors.

We can help this initiative by making donations here.
